SCA Roasting Intermediate | The Coffee Roasting Institute

Master the art of coffee-roasting through our intensive, hands-on SCA Roasting Intermediate course.  Over three days, we will examine coffee roasting from both a scientific and artistic point-of-view.  This course is for students who have experience in roasting or who have taken our SCA Coffee Roasting Foundations course.  While many coffee roasting schools teach through lectures and slideshows, CRI is different.  Rather, we will teach you how to roast exceptional coffee on one of our six San Franciscan™ roasters.  Students will learn central coffee roasting techniques to help them further their career in coffee roasting.  Additionally, we will cover regulations, sensory skills, cupping, and more.


SCA Coffee Roasting Intermediate Topics

The SCA Coffee Roasting Intermediate course will explore the core concepts of coffee roasting.  To start, we will review basic subjects and the farm-to-cup process.  Then, students will learn coffee roasting topics including roast development, Rate of Rise (RoR), roast consistency, roast quality, and more.  Additionally, students will learn about roasting operations, safety, and regulations.  Finally, students will have the opportunity to taste roasted coffees according to SCA-certified cupping protocol.  Upon completion of the course, students will take the SCA Coffee Roasting Intermediate test.  If students pass, they will receive 10 points toward their SCA Coffee Skills Diploma.

 

Using a Hands-On Approach to Roast Better Coffee

At the Coffee Roasting Institute, we believe the best way to learn how to roast coffee is by roasting coffee.  For that reason, we will never make you sit through a lecture or slideshow.  Using one of our six San Franciscan roasters, students will learn how to roast coffee with direct, hands-on training.  Simultaneously, instructors will explain the various roasting tools and techniques, so you can roast better coffee!

Our SCA Coffee Roasting Intermediate course can help you become a professional roaster!  If you would like to expand your coffee roasting knowledge, we offer additional courses.  First, students must take our SCA Coffee Roasting Foundations course to learn the basics. After completing our SCA Coffee Roasting Intermediate course, students can move on to our SCA Coffee Roasting Professional course.  When bundled together, these courses can help you become a professional coffee roaster.  This package is perfect for students who want a career in the coffee roasting industry, or for those who want to open a coffee roastery.
